Big Woody Root《大樹根》

Pik Cheng is a contemporary artist based in Hong Kong.  She graduated from RMIT University with a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) degree.

Pik likes hiking at Sham Shui Po Bishop Hill and jogging at Tai Hang Tung Recreation Ground since childhood.  There are many Banyan Trees.  In the spring of 2020, under the Covid-19 pandemic, she has conducted life drawing there frequently, perceiving the philosophies on disaster and resilience.  She discovered the following:

Every day the Banyan Tree watches people passing by, that

       some of them are busy, besides

       some are happy and excited, moreover

       some are anxious.

Day after day, year after year, it has been standing firmly all the time.

Under whatever big disaster, it has never escaped or avoided from facing the tragedy.

It’s trunks and roots grow continuously.   They have revived after dead.

It witnesses people’s everyday life,

silently guarding this city.

今璧是香港當代藝術家。  她畢業於RMIT大學藝術文學士並主修繪畫。   她主要用油彩和水彩繪畫作為媒介，描繪她在香港大都市的日常生活經歷和觀察, 探索人與環境和諧共存的關係。  

今璧自小喜歡到深水埗主教山行山及大坑東遊樂場跑步。  那邊兒長了很多榕樹。  在2020年春天, 當冠狀病毒疫情嚴峻時，她經常在主教山寫生，啟發她對災難及重生哲學的領悟。她發現: 

那榕樹每天看著人們經過，

        有匆忙的、

       有歡喜的, 雀躍的、

       也有憂心忡忡的。

它日復日、年復年、風雨不改的站著。

無論多大的災難, 它不會離開或逃避。

它的樹幹和根部不斷生長，枯謝後再次生長，

百多年來見証人們的生活，默默地守護著這城市。
